Austrian police

Austrian police

The Austrian police consist of the security services (the federal minister of the interior, the provincial police directorates and the district authorities) and the guard units affiliated with or subordinate to them.

The most important and largest guard unit is the federal police, which performs police duties throughout Austria. It includes some about 1000 police inspectorates and about 23,000 employees, and it is subordinate to the federal minister of the interior. It was formed on 1 July 2005 by merging the federal security guard corps and the criminal investigation corps (commonly known as the police), which are mainly located in larger cities, and the Federal Gendarmerie.
