Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits is the oldest European company to provide sleeping car, dining car and luxury train services. After its founding in 1872/1876, CIWL became the largest provider of sleeping and dining car services in Europe. From 1881, it also introduced its own luxury trains, with the Orient Express and the Train Bleu being the most famous. CIWL also became active in Africa and Asia. The company had its largest fleet in 1931 with 2268 vehicles and became the world's largest tourism group after the acquisition of Thomas Cook and Son.
